this morning, breaking news. thousands of teachers on strike. >> chicago teachers set to hit the picket lines within a few hours. the district and the city now scrambling to care for nearly 500,000 kids. huge haul. the campaign cash. numbers overnight as the president sees a lift in a pizza parlor. peyton manning's denver debut. one of the keys to a generation away from the game for two years but showing he's still got it. and online outrage. the parent who encouraged his son to do this.

good morning, everyone. we begin this monday with the new school year in chicago about to come to a screeching halt. >> that's right. this morning, teachers in the nation's third largest school system are set to go on strike for the first time in 25 years. >> months of tense negotiations over pay and job security collapsed late last night. and the strike will mean no classes for more than 400,000 students and no paychecks for 29,000 teachers and support staff. mayor rahm emanuel blamed the teachers calling the strike unnecessary. >> we are making this progress. this is no time to have a strike, given the issues are not financial, two issues that we can finish. >> 144 schools will be open to serve breakfast and lunch and offer some form of supervision. as parents scramble to make

other plans. we will be following the stories throughout the morning on abc. also developing overnight, new momentum for president obama after last week's convention. he is now ahead in some new poll numbers and also in campaign cash. >> and romney said if elected he would keep parts of the president's health care plan. >> reporter: good morning, president obama is feeling a post convention boost so mitt romney it trying to meet working class voters in ohio. the campaigns are hunkering down in crucial battlegrounds faced with president obama getting a lift coming out of the democratic national convention. the gallup daily tracking poll now has mr. obama five points ahead of mr. romney. quoting seniors in florida over the weekend, the president blasted the romney medicare plan. >> so here the bottom line. their plan bankrupts medicare. our plan strengthening medicare.

>> reporter: romney in an interview used the disappointing numbers to rip president obama's record. >> not that it's a jobless recovery, if it's a recovery at all. it really doesn't look like a recovery. >> reporter: the obama campaign hit back with v.p. biden campaigning in ohio, attacking romney's economic plan. >> folks, we'veeen this movie before. and we know how it ends. it ends in a catastrophe for the middle class. >> reporter: health care is also being debated on the trail with romney raising some eyebrows. for months, the gop hopeful said he would repeal the president's health care law but now -- >> i'm not getting rid of all of health care reform, of course. there are a number of things that i like that i'm going to put in place. >> reporter: today, romney heads to the crucial state of ohio, no republican has ever won the white house without winning the buckeye state. without ohio, romney would need to win every battle ground state

after the white house. for the first time in four months, the obama campaigned pulled ahead of romney's campaign. bringing in $14 million, romney campaign, $111 million. >> thanks, tahman. >> a big bear hug this morning, tahman. well, campaign stops while the democrats offered up a few unexpected photo ops over the weekend. let's show it to you again he. president obama paid a visit to a pizza parlor down in ft. pierce, florida, that's where the you have enthusiastic owner of the joint, scott van duzer lifted the commander in chief. van duzer can bench press 350 pounds as well as the leader of the free world. also, vice president joe biden stopped by cruiser's designer in ohio, hey, good morning, joe. where he met some bikers. a female member of the group said she had nowhere to sit. but as you can see from that

photo, she ended up right in the middle of things. you have to wonder what the vp was saying. we also have one tragic note to pass on from the campaign trail. a motorcycle officer working security for the president's motorcade in west palm beach was hit by a pick uptruck and killed. the officer was helping to shut down i-95 ahead of the motorcade when he was struck. the white house said the president did not see the accident. and iraq has just suffered one of its deadliest days since withdrawal of groups. in nearly two dozens shootings across the countries and hundreds of others wounded. no one has claimed responsibility but the government is blaming al qaeda. and a top al qaeda leader has been killed in a car crash. he was born in algeria and had

been a longtime leader of the terror group. the accident took place in western africa. just in time for the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. there is word this morning that the government is about to officially link cancer to death around new york's ground zero. that link could be made as soon as tomorrow. and it means that rescue and recovery workers and those who live near ground zero could seek from the compensation fund. hundreds have died from cancer since 9/11. and new yorkers are recovering from a weekend of wild weather stunned by two extremely rare tornadoes. the twisters touching down in brooklyn and queens on saturday just moments apart. they ripped apart roofs and tre trees winds topping 100 miles per hour. and new york's only had about 15 tornadoes since 1950.

join zyrtec® rewards. welcome back on this monday morning. now that summer is over, there's hope for gasoline prices. the average price per gallon is now 3.yes, 17 cents up from a year ago. aaa says prices should be heading down now that summer driving and hurricane season is ending, some complains you don't get as many miles per gallon. all right. the federal government plans to cut by more than half its stake in aig. it will sell off at least $18

billion worth of stock. the treasury department, though, expects to earn a profit on its investment which was the most controversial of the bailout of the economic crisis four years ago. and as a way to lure customers into its stores, jcpenney will again offer free haircuts for kids on sundays starting in november. the department store chain says there was an overwhelming response to its offer last month. most of it more enthusiastic than that little guy right there. well, the weekend after labor day is always slow for movie theaters but this was the slowest weekend since 9/11. "the possession" was again tops at the box office but not a single film cracked $10 million. the "possession" sold $9.5 million. trying to catch a monkey on the l lam. the monkey finally came back on its own. it's actually the second time the monkey has escaped from a cage in the past. a wandering bear created quite a traffic hazard. all lanes in both directions of the 210 freeways were closed. finally the bear was surrounded at an intersection and hit with a tranquilizer dart. >> and that's today's edition of animal planet. now, to a dramatic rescue. a father and son were pulled to safety by the coast guard after the small aircraft ditched in the water and began to sink. they were headed to canada when the engine stalled. the men were not hurt but it sank to the bottom of the ocean. and there's positive

identification on a big piece of metal that literally fell from the sky and came crashing to the street in suburban seattle. they have confirmed it's part of a landing gear from a 757. residents say they saw a low-flying cargo jet in that area on friday about the same time the part fell. and that's an old medical building in ft. worth coming to the ground over the weekend. the implosion made way for a new office building and parking lot. all of that dirt and dust in the name of progress. well, a tulane university football player is in stable condition in an intensive care unit after suffering a fractured spine. number 18, devon walker was injured saturday. it's fracture was stabled in a
